Vehicle Maintenance Checklist
Regular maintenance is essential to keep your vehicle running smoothly, safely, and efficiently. Use this comprehensive checklist to ensure you're keeping up with all the necessary maintenance tasks.
Monthly Maintenance
Check Tyre Pressure
Check all tyres (including the spare) when cold using a quality pressure gauge. Inflate to the pressure listed on the sticker inside your driver's door jamb or in your owner's manual.
Check Engine Oil Level
Check with the engine off and cooled down. The oil should be between the minimum and maximum marks on the dipstick. Top up if necessary with the specified grade of oil.
Check Coolant Level
Only check when the engine is cold. The level should be between the minimum and maximum marks on the coolant reservoir. Never open the radiator cap when the engine is hot.
Inspect Windscreen Wipers
Check for cracks, splits, or hardening of the rubber. Replace if they streak or skip during use. Also check and top up windscreen washer fluid.
Check All Lights
Test headlights (high and low beam), brake lights, turn signals, hazard lights, and interior lights. Replace bulbs as needed.
Every 3 Months or 5,000 Kilometers
Check Air Filter
A dirty air filter reduces fuel economy and engine performance. Hold it up to a light source - if you can't see light through it, it's time for a replacement.
Inspect Battery and Terminals
Check for corrosion on the terminals and ensure connections are tight. Clean terminals if necessary using a wire brush and battery cleaner.
Check Power Steering Fluid
Check the level in the reservoir and top up if needed with the specified fluid. Look for leaks around the pump and hoses.
Inspect Belts and Hoses
Look for cracks, fraying, or softening in all accessible belts and hoses. Also check for proper tension in drive belts.
Every 6 Months or 10,000 Kilometers
Oil and Filter Change
For most vehicles, this is the recommended interval, though some modern vehicles with synthetic oil can go longer. Always follow your manufacturer's recommendations.
Rotate Tyres
Regular rotation ensures even wear and extends tyre life. Also check tread depth and look for uneven wear patterns that might indicate alignment issues.
Check Brake Pads and Fluid
Inspect brake pad thickness and check the brake fluid level. Look for fluid leaks around wheels and brake lines.
Lubricate Door Hinges and Locks
Apply lubricant to door hinges, hood latch, and trunk latch. Check that all locks operate smoothly.
Annually or Every 20,000 Kilometers
Wheel Alignment
Have your wheel alignment checked, especially if you notice uneven tyre wear or if the vehicle pulls to one side.
Fuel Filter Replacement
For vehicles with serviceable fuel filters, replace according to manufacturer recommendations. Many modern vehicles have lifetime filters built into the fuel pump.
Cabin Air Filter Replacement
This filter cleans the air entering your vehicle's cabin. A clogged filter can reduce heating and A/C efficiency and introduce allergens.
Comprehensive Inspection
Have a professional mechanic perform a thorough inspection of all major systems, including suspension, steering, exhaust, and emissions.
Every 2-3 Years or 40,000-60,000 Kilometers
Coolant Flush
Drain and replace engine coolant according to manufacturer specifications. Old coolant can become acidic and damage cooling system components.
Brake Fluid Flush
Brake fluid absorbs moisture over time, which can lead to reduced braking performance and component corrosion. Most manufacturers recommend changing every 2-3 years.
Transmission Fluid Service
Change transmission fluid and filter according to manufacturer's recommendations. Important for both automatic and manual transmissions.
Spark Plug Replacement
Modern vehicles with iridium or platinum plugs can go 100,000 km or more, but conventional plugs need more frequent replacement. Check your owner's manual for the recommended interval.
Every 4-5 Years or 80,000-100,000 Kilometers
Timing Belt Replacement
If your vehicle has a timing belt (not all do), replacing it at the recommended interval is critical. A broken timing belt can cause catastrophic engine damage in interference engines.
Water Pump Inspection/Replacement
The water pump is often replaced with the timing belt as preventative maintenance, since the labor is largely the same.
A/C System Service
Have the air conditioning system checked and serviced, especially important in Australia's climate. This includes checking refrigerant levels and system performance.
Fuel System Cleaning
Consider a professional fuel system cleaning service to remove deposits from injectors, intake valves, and combustion chambers.
